CHAPTER ELEVEN

Twig’s elderly engine was clearly audible from inside the house when he rolled up with Noah’s deliveries. The truck had a voice of its own, clattering like a DIYer had built the thing using half of the correct materials and improvised the rest. Twig was accustomed to letting himself in, but in light of the recent addition to his household Noah thought it best to meet him outside.

“I’m assuming you ought to stay out here?”

“Yeah, best do that for now. There’s no sense stressing him out if he hears me downstairs.” Twig did walk his cooler up to the front porch, though, leaning to deposit it on the top step. “Ezra has the containers labelled by day. She knows how to get a malnourished dragon back up to speed so I would use as prescribed. It won’t look like a lot at first, because it isn’t. She’s starting him on the same weight his feeding chart indicated and working him up from there.”

“I’ll text her later to thank her.”

“She told me to tell you to give him small amounts in multiple sittings like you would a baby bird. Her words.” Twig grinned a little at the idea of Liam being a baby anything. “Though I can kind of see it. He has that same ‘so ugly it’s cute’ thing going on.”

Noah wasn’t sure if he agreed with that assessment, but he also hadn’t thought much about Liam’s appearance since he met the drake. He’d been busy watching him for other reasons—to see if he’d die, to see if he’d kill, to see if he’d run. For someone who spent so much time staring at another person, Noah’s scrutiny had been remarkably clinical. The detective didn’t think Liam was that ugly, though. Just short.

“How are you faring so far? I got your message about Liam waking up but I was already driving. Frankly, I’m amazed that your house is still standing.” And the way Twig looked at it suggested that he didn’t expect things to stay that way for long.

“He wasn’t thrilled about the incision or the harness, but I’ve explained both. He’ll come around.” Noah actually had no idea if that was the truth, but everyone else was being so pessimistic. Someone had to balance things out. “He’s trying not to cooperate, but I’ve gotten him to swallow some painkillers.”

“Painkillers are good,” Twig agreed. “Painkillers make you sleep. Oh.” He strode back over to the truck like something had occurred to him. “Don’t let me leave with your books. I have the primer that Olivetti wrote, but you’ll have to pick through the others for useful information. They’re geared more towards specific needs like …” He flipped one of the books over to look at the title. “A … guide to writing your last will and testament. Actually, you don’t need this one. Ezra think’s she’s funny, that’s all.” He tossed it back into the seat, sorting through the others and handing two keepers to Noah. “That guy is a hack,” he said, referring to the book that wasn’t Olivetti’s.
